Walk from the centre
Most central sights are within a 15-minute walk: the Duomo is about 7 minutes away along Via dei Calzaiuoli, the Ponte Vecchio about 5, and the Uffizi is next door.

The former Gucci Garden is now Palazzo Gucci, home of the Gucci Storia exhibition, at Piazza della Signoria 10. It is in the pedestrian heart of Florence, about 15 minutes’ walk from Santa Maria Novella station. This guide covers walking routes, the T1 and T2 trams, the C1 electric bus, the airport, taxis, parking outside the ZTL, accessible arrival, luggage and timing. It also explains why the separate Gucci Giardino address catches people out.
Piazza della Signoria is in Florence’s car-free historic centre, so every route ends on foot. Within the centre, walking is fastest. From farther away, take the tram to the edge of the centre, or the C1 electric bus to the Uffizi stop, and walk the last few minutes.
Most central sights are within a 15-minute walk: the Duomo is about 7 minutes away along Via dei Calzaiuoli, the Ponte Vecchio about 5, and the Uffizi is next door.
T2 runs from Peretola Aeroporto via Alamanni Stazione (Santa Maria Novella) and Fortezza to Piazza San Marco. Get off at Alamanni Stazione or San Marco: both are about 15 minutes on foot from Piazza della Signoria.
T1 links Villa Costanza (Scandicci) with Careggi hospital, stopping at Alamanni Stazione by Santa Maria Novella. Use it from the Scandicci side, the Villa Costanza park-and-ride, or the northern Careggi area.
The small C1 electric bus runs from Parterre through the centre, via San Marco, San Lorenzo and the Duomo, to the Galleria degli Uffizi stop, a minute or two from Palazzo Gucci.
A taxi suits luggage, reduced mobility or a late arrival. Florence taxis are white and are taken from ranks or booked by phone or app, rather than hailed. Ask for Piazza della Signoria; the last metres may be on foot.
Do not drive into the centre. It is a camera-controlled limited traffic zone (ZTL), and unauthorised cars are fined automatically. Park outside it and switch to the tram, the C1 bus or your feet.
Gucci Giardino is Gucci’s café and cocktail bar at Piazza della Signoria 37r, on the same square. It is not the exhibition entrance at Palazzo Gucci.
Guided leather and fashion walks often meet away from Palazzo Gucci. For example, the private leather and fashion tour meets at the statue of Dante in Piazza Santa Croce, about 10 minutes’ walk from the palazzo.
You will see the names Gucci Garden, Gucci Museo, Palazzo Gucci and Gucci Storia used for the same building. What matters is the street number.
Gucci Storia is on the first and second floors. The boutique and Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura are on the ground floor.
Gucci’s all-day café and bar is a separate venue on the same square. The “r” (rosso) marks a commercial address in Florence’s dual numbering system.
A fashion tour may meet elsewhere in the centre and usually does not include museum admission. Its booking instructions set the meeting place.
Florence numbers homes and offices in black (or blue) and shops and businesses in red, so “10” and “10r” can be far apart on the same street.
That address is Gucci Giardino. For Gucci Storia and Palazzo Gucci, save Piazza della Signoria 10.
Florence has no metro, and the tram does not enter the medieval centre. The two tram lines bring you to Santa Maria Novella or San Marco, and you finish on foot.
T1 runs through Scandicci and the western suburbs to Alamanni Stazione beside Santa Maria Novella, then north to Careggi hospital.
T2 links the airport with Alamanni Stazione and Valfonda by the station, then Fortezza, the viali and Piazza San Marco. The airport to San Marco takes about 35 minutes.
A single urban ticket covers trams and buses for 90 minutes. The standard fare rose to €2.00 on 1 August 2026. Children under 11 travel free.
Use the machines at tram stops, tobacconists and newsagents, or tap a contactless card on the on-board reader where available.
Trams run about every 4–5 minutes at peak times. Check service notices for evenings, holidays and engineering works.
Florence’s official tram portal publishes current routes and notices. Check the Tramvia service updates before travelling.
Autolinee Toscane runs Florence’s buses. Ordinary buses cannot enter the pedestrian core, but the small C1 electric bus runs through it.
Stops include Parterre, Cavour Guelfa, Cavour Palazzo Medici, Piazza di San Lorenzo, Cappelle Medicee, Roma Duomo, Proconsolo and Galleria degli Uffizi.
From Santa Maria Novella, walk about 5 minutes to the Cappelle Medicee or Piazza di San Lorenzo stop and ride to Galleria degli Uffizi.
Northbound buses run from the Oltrarno via Santa Croce (Benci, Verdi), the Duomo area and San Marco back to Parterre.
C1 also serves Pitti and Borgo San Iacopo. Walking over the Ponte Vecchio is usually just as quick.
The C-line minibuses are small, step-free vehicles, but they get crowded in high season.
Narrow streets and traffic slow the minibuses. Walking is often just as fast within the centre.
Routes can change. Check the Autolinee Toscane C1 timetable on the day.
Approximate walking times at an easy pace. Crowds in summer and around the Duomo can add a few minutes.
| Starting point | Simple route | Approx. time | Final step |

Florence Airport (Peretola) is about 5 km from the centre and well served by tram T2. Pisa Airport is about an hour away by train.
The cheapest option. The tram stop is just outside the terminal and trams are frequent through the day.
Taxis from the rank outside arrivals charge a fixed fare to the historic centre. In 2024 it was €28, €30 on holidays and €32 at night (22:00–06:00), plus €1 per bag (maximum €7). Check the current fare at the rank.
The PisaMover shuttle links the airport with Pisa Centrale. Regional trains to Firenze Santa Maria Novella take about an hour; check fares and times on Trenitalia.
Palazzo Gucci is not set up for suitcases. Go to your hotel first, or use the left-luggage service at Santa Maria Novella station, before visiting.
Passport control, baggage, the tram or taxi and the final walk all add time. Leave a buffer of at least two hours after landing for a timed booking.
Use the station’s left-luggage service or your hotel. Then exit onto Piazza della Stazione, facing the church of Santa Maria Novella.
Follow Via de’ Panzani and Via de’ Cerretani to the Duomo, then turn right down Via dei Calzaiuoli to Piazza della Signoria. It is about 1.2 km and flat.
Walk about 5 minutes to Piazza di San Lorenzo and take C1 to Galleria degli Uffizi. For a guided activity, go to the meeting point on your voucher.
The centre is flat and compact, but crowds, heat and uneven paving can make routes feel longer. Comfortable shoes help.
Via dei Calzaiuoli is a straight, pedestrian shopping street linking Florence’s two main squares. Halfway along, you pass the church of Orsanmichele.
From the bridge, walk up Via Por Santa Maria and turn right onto Via Vacchereccia, or walk through the Uffizi courtyard from the riverfront.
Getting close to Piazza della Signoria is very different from parking beside it. The square is pedestrian and inside the ZTL.
Call 055 4242 or 055 4390, use a taxi app, or go to a rank. Ask for Piazza della Signoria 10 and keep your booking open in case the driver stops short.
The Villa Costanza car park sits directly on the A1 motorway, with tram T1 to Alamanni Stazione. From there it is a 15-minute walk.
The Parterre car park near Piazza della Libertà is the first stop of the C1 bus, which runs to Galleria degli Uffizi. Check rates and hours in advance.
Cameras record every car entering the limited traffic zone. Rental cars are fined through the rental company, often months later.
Hotels inside the ZTL can sometimes register your plate for luggage drop-off. Confirm before you drive in.
Pedestrian streets and traffic rules prevent door-to-door drop-off at the square.
Palazzo Gucci is well equipped inside. The bigger challenge is the stone paving and crowds of the historic centre outside.
Palazzo Gucci’s entrances are accessible. The main entrance has an assistance bell to call staff.
Two lifts serve the first and second floors, and stair-lifts cover changes of level. Accessible toilets are available.
Reception staff can assist visitors, and a standard wheelchair is available on site.
Trams and the C1 electric buses are low-floor. Book an accessible taxi in advance by phone.
The square and nearby streets are paved with large, uneven stone slabs. Via dei Calzaiuoli is the smoothest approach from the Duomo.
For specific needs, contact Palazzo Gucci on +39 055 75927010 or at guccipalazzo@gucci.com.
Palazzo Gucci does not publish detailed bag, security or storage rules for Gucci Storia, so plan for a small-bag visit.
The rooms are compact and the setting is a historic palace. Leave suitcases at your hotel or the station’s left-luggage service.
Rules can vary by installation. Ask staff before using flash, tripods or professional equipment.
Re-entry and late-arrival rules are not published. Read the latest booking instructions before leaving.
Save the ticket, entry address, meeting-point instructions and contact details before leaving your hotel. Signal can drop inside stone buildings.
Gucci Storia is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 until 31 October 2026, and from 10:00 to 19:00 from 1 November 2026 to 31 May 2027.
The exhibition takes about an hour to see properly. Opening time and the late afternoon are usually calmer than midday.
A tour can use a separate meeting point and may not include exhibition admission.
Use the street number and your booking address. A familiar name can still send you to the wrong door.
The Palazzo Gucci address for Gucci Storia, the boutique and Gucci Osteria, in the Palazzo della Mercanzia.
Gucci Giardino, the separate café and cocktail bar on the same square.
The tall crenellated tower of the town hall confirms you are in Piazza della Signoria. Palazzo Gucci is a short walk along the east side of the square.
Ammannati’s fountain beside Palazzo Vecchio and the arched loggia full of statues confirm you are in the right square.
The C1 stop closest to the square, a minute or two from Palazzo Gucci.
The main station, about 1.2 km away and served by the Alamanni Stazione tram stop on T1 and T2.
A correct route only helps if it ends at the right door at the right time.
Use the current ticket or operator message, not an old calendar entry.
